July 6, 1944 ~ Patton Heads to France

LTG George S. Patton departed England for Cherbourg, France today in 1944.

For the past 11-months Patton had been out of action. After sweeping victories in North Africa and Sicily in 1943, Patton was relived of command of the U.S. Seventh Army after a series of self-inflicted public relations SNAFUs made him a pariah.

July 4, 1776 ~ South Carolina’s Signers of the Declaration

Today we celebrate the birthday of the United States of America as an independent nation.

On July 2, 1776 the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia voted in favor of independence from Great Britain. For 2-days, the assembled representatives debated the final text of a document that laid out the arguments for the divorce. Finally on July 4th after 86 mostly innocuous revisions had been made to the draft, Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence.

June 3, 1863 ~ Pickett’s Charge

In the summer of 1863, Confederate General Robert E. Lee determined that the only way to end the war between the states was to cross the Potomac River from Virginia into Union controlled territory and wage an offensive war on Union soil.
